Why We Dig Into the Dirt: The Prairie Dog Farms Story
Prairie Dog Farms is an urban farming and gardening brand
Built on passion, community, and the love of growing food.
Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting, we share insights on urban farming, plant care, and sustainable living, especially for those in city environments.
🌾 Our Vision
Our long-term vision is to grow Prairie Dog Farms into a full-scale Market Garden—a thriving source of fresh, locally grown food right here in Pittsburgh.
We aim to:
Sell directly to our community
Supply restaurants and local distributors
Give back through regular food donations to those in need
This isn’t just a project, it’s a commitment to equity, access, and rooted relationships.
🌱 Our Mission
Prairie Dog Farms is more than just a garden—it’s a growing movement. We’re here to:
Break stereotypes about who gets to farm
Build bridges through community collaboration
Inspire others to reconnect with the land
We’re working to partner with garden influencers, support other urban growers, and launch an eCommerce store offering tools, grow guides, and branded gear.
We’re growing this thing one seed, one harvest, and one community at a time.
Join us as we grow one seed, one harvest, and one community at a time. 🌱
Meet The Gardener!
What’s goin on Doggos?
I’m Zach!
A Pittsburgh native with a passion for creativity, growth, and community.
I graduated from Taylor Allderdice in 2016 and went on to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Multimedia/Graphic Design from Point Park University in 2021
Navigating my way through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including taking a year off due to the state of the world.
During that time, while facing unemployment, I dove into Digital Marketing.
I learned how to help brands and businesses succeed online.
But an unexpected Secret Santa gift in 2021 changed my life
A bonsai seed kit!
The gift would spark my love for gardening, and from that moment on, I was hooked.
Anything with a seed, I wanted to grow.
I started with bonsai trees, then moved on to fruit trees, experimenting with propagation—especially mango trees.
That passion quickly evolved into growing everyday garden fruits and vegetables, leading me to the next step in my journey: No-Till gardening.
“I didn’t grow up on a farm. I didn’t even grow up gardening.
But after watching food prices soar, stumbling across one too many empty produce shelves, and falling down a YouTube rabbit hole—I started asking: Can I really grow my own food right here in the city?”
Now, through Prairie Dog Farms, I’m embracing urban farming, sharing my experiences, and hoping to inspire others to grow their own food—no matter where they live. Whether you’re in a city apartment, a backyard space, or just starting out, I believe that gardening is for everyone.
